Aaron has writen about this in his blog before and I’ve piggy-backed on his entry because I think this is an important issue. He’s posted an interesting and informative video that explains some of the eccentricities of the electoral college system, created by an organization called National Popular Vote. Their goal is to pass state-by-state legislation that calls for direct election of the President. They’ve already succeeded in four states and are making progress elsewhere.
If you’d like to watch this video, then feel free to visit National Popular Vote’s website. All the action that is required from you is to write or email your state legislator and make your voice heard. It’s that easy.
If you’re interested, you can also read the book Every Vote Equal: A State-Based Plan For Electing The President By National Popular Vote for free at this website. If you are an American citizen, I hope you’ll learn a bit more about this movement. As they say in the video, it would eliminate the artificial red state/blue state dichotomy and see the states as they really are: purple.
Thus endeth today’s public service announcement.
This is the first time I heard the term: purple state. hehe
I’m a huge advocate of the idea of one person, one vote. The electoral college is so outdated!
