I’m sitting on the third floor of Roadhouse BBQ, an American-owned restaurant on Rama IV road, with members of Democrats Abroad. There’s about 100 people here including news reporters and photographers from some of the newspapers. A few minutes ago CNN (which is playing on all the screens) announced Obama’s win and a huge cheer went up. For Americans abroad, many of whom see this election in terms of how America is perceived abroad, this was the result we were anxious for.
As a person at the next table over put it, “Now we can take those Canadian flags off our backpacks.”
More photos and footage later today when I return home. Meanwhile, a mid-day bloody mary to celebrate this historic win.
P.S. Huge kudos to Senator McCain for a very graceful concession speech. Had he been more like that during his campaign, I think he would have won.

Here I am glued to the tv watching NBC news and counting the blue & red states. Senator McCain delivered a very eloquent speech indeed and history is being made!

I thought that was a very gracious concession speech too. It was really interesting and inspiring watching Obama’s speech.
@ElusiveWords – Although I thought McCain’s speech was actually better than Obama’s, but maybe that’s just because Obama’s crowd was so in shock they could barely respond. =)
i was contemplating voting for Nader last night, but ended up voting for Obama. Hope things will really change with him in office!!
I thought it was very tacky that McCain’s supporters booed when he mentioned Obama. That sure didn’t happen in Chicago!
I agree completely with you on McCain’s speech…Why didn’t he speak like that DURING the campaign? What a loss.Time to follow state props and local measures.
@ansar_al_Eisa – That was the sentiment broadly held at the Dems Abroad event. Had McCain been more… presidential? senatorial? he probably would have won.
@christao408 – Agree. McCain is not the best speech giver. Oh well. Everyone start drinking the Kool-Aid. There is 4 years worth of it. Have a safe trip back to the states.

Was a historic day for sure and I was very impressed with McCain’s concession speech as well. Just wish we could have defeated Prop 8. Looks like it passed with much disgust. 52% to 48%. I guess 8 years has not changed the overall mentality of the voters in parts of the state which I so commonly avoid.
@maxwebr – Well, some change. Prop 22 passed with 61% of the vote, so you could argue that in 8 years we have seen a 9 percentage point improvement. In another 8 years we should have a clear majority.
@christao408 – well it appears not to be over yet. No on Prop 8 says “With at least 3 million ballots still to be counted, from counties we have not yet seen identified, the race could, at a minimum narrow, with the margin becoming much closer.”
We can only hope those 3 mil narrow the range enough. But you are right it was much better than Prop 22 and this may well go back into the Supreme court again.
